### 與曾見臺太宰

> Meeting with the Grand Steward of Taizhou

往者同江雪夜。一夕千秋。臨別教言。泰山九鼎。不獨感道義情真。實荷慈悲慨切。令此枯朽。得植根株於炎方瘴海之閒。不為境風搖奪者。皆仗老居士一語之力也。恭聞法體日益康健。此天佐以黃髮耆頤之福。願加珍衛。慎起居。節飲食。省思寡慮。此為太上延年之術。第念佛一門。尤為晚年凝神極樂之祕訣。出世之上䇿也。惟翁居人臣之極。而世間相。已視如浮塵矣。其出世之功。儻稍留心於此。未必不為此生究竟樂地也。

> In the past, by the river on a snowy night, a single evening felt like a thousand autumns. Your parting words of guidance were weighty as Mount Tai and the Nine Tripods. Not only did I deeply feel the sincerity of your moral friendship, but I was also profoundly moved by your compassionate generosity. Because of this, this withered and decaying one has been able to take root in the scorching, miasmic southern seas, without being shaken or swept away by the winds of circumstance—all thanks to the power of your single phrase, venerable lay practitioner. I have respectfully heard that your Dharma body grows healthier with each passing day. This is heaven bestowing upon you the blessings of a long life with white hair and a venerable countenance. I pray you will take extra care to protect yourself: be mindful of your daily activities, moderate your diet, reduce thoughts and worries. These are the supreme methods for prolonging life. As for the practice of Buddha-recitation, it is especially the secret key for one’s later years to focus the mind on the Land of Ultimate Bliss—the highest strategy for transcending this world. You, sir, have reached the pinnacle of worldly service, yet you already regard worldly appearances as floating dust. If you were to devote even a little attention to this practice of transcending the world, it would surely become the ultimate realm of joy in this very life.
