> On this journey of ten thousand miles, I have been fortunate to receive the generous support of noble messengers, guiding me directly to the far shore. How could this not be the power of the Dharma? This gratitude is beyond words. Since entering this land of miasma, my heart has known its own transgressions. Day and night, I diligently practice repentance, not daring to betray the sacred grace or fail the trust of my friends. Amidst the poisonous mists, I hold the Dharma in my heart, unwavering day and night. Recently, the venerable Qianfeng arrived, and I was blessed to receive the sound of the Dharma—a joy beyond expression. I have learned of the sacred intention behind this dedication: the great turning of the Dharma wheel, its light spreading across seas and lands. Yet, in the silent workings of the profound pivot, it is the power of wisdom that plays the greater part. What boundless joy! Like the sandalwood Tathāgata, this lowly one shoulders the burden, facing hardships of every kind, too numerous to recount in full. Now, through the compassionate hand and eye, I am lifted from the depths of delusion, so that the Dharma-body may not be lost, and this lowly mind may find liberation. I no longer cling to thoughts of attaining Buddhahood. Why then seek the Tathāgata in coming and going, or dwell on forms while practicing generosity? All the various causes and conditions through which we seek the Buddha-way are matters within our own duty. I only fear we might miss it when it stands right before us.

> The appearance of the Tathagata in this world is never due to a single cause or condition. It must arise from the mutual resonance of response and call, where the opportunity and the means mysteriously align. Is this true only for the Buddha-realm? Every dharma is like this. Consider the matter of the Sandalwood Tathagata—within it lies something truly inconceivable. However, the Buddha Tathagata emerged before Shan Ye arrived, and the assembly under the seat arose after Shan Ye had already departed. Yet this Buddha-work could not have begun without Shan Ye, nor could it have been completed without the assembly. If we examine this chain of causes and conditions carefully, had it fallen into the hands of ordinary beings, it would have been nothing more than dry wood and rotten stumps, destined for Danxia’s stove. Even if it had involved the venerable elder’s beard and eyebrows, what benefit would that have brought? How then could it have manifested in the Tusita Heaven, descended into the imperial city, and inspired countless humans and gods to give rise to a rare and earnest heart, serving as a bridge across the sea of suffering? From this perspective, we should understand that the realm of the Tathagata cannot be measured by ordinary thinking or speculation. I previously wrote a letter to Inspector Zhu of Nan-Shao, requesting his protection of the Dharma. Yesterday, I received word that he has already issued an order to the officials of Nanxiong to escort you across the mountain pass. However, the messenger seems rather careless, and those accompanying you may simply follow along without much thought. I do not know when you will arrive at the capital, where the white curl between your eyebrows will suddenly shine forth, illuminating all the eastern lands. Within that light, all kinds of causes and conditions will unfold. For those practicing the Bodhisattva path, even if doubts arise like those of Maitreya, they will be fully and clearly penetrated by the wisdom-eye of Manjushri, without needing the exhausted to chatter on and on. I send you one leaf of the \*Lankavatara Sutra\* to offer to your wise eyes. This sutra illuminates the realm of our daily, immediate experience, enabling sudden genuine realization—it is what is called the Sudden Teaching. May you, in your seat, never forget this Dharma, even for a moment, throughout the twelve periods of the day and night.
