Regarding the matter of boundary consecration, the sangha's general guidelines were established during the decline of the Dharma to preserve and support the Buddhist teachings. The communal recitation (karmavacana) serves as the foundation of this practice. Yet because few practitioners truly uphold these traditions, those who are skilled in them have become rare.
During the Xianchun era of the Song dynasty, the Vinaya master Monk Wenyin of Siming compiled a record of boundary consecration procedures. Taking his work as a model, I have composed additional chapters outside the main text, including general instructions, seating arrangements, incense offerings, seating protocols, and twenty chapters in total. These are assembled in a compendium of essential phrases, designed as a practical guide for later practitioners. I dare not present this to those who are already accomplished—may they not mock my efforts.

The chanting directions for the boundary ceremony are difficult for people to understand on the spot. Therefore, I have created two diagrams, using the outer earthen wall, the gate threshold, and the stone markers as references for the inner and outer edges along the four cardinal directions. The starting point is the front left corner of the temple.
