> Birth

> <note>It has long been said that during the morning meal, one should recite the verse on the miraculous power of the Dharma, and during the midday meal, the verse on the great Garuda bird. Upon closer reasoning, however—whether it be the morning meal, a small snack, or the midday meal—whenever making offerings or giving rise to generosity, both verses should be recited together. This alone aligns with the true intent. Otherwise, one risks falling into a narrow view and straying into improper practice.</note>

> Miraculous is the power of Dharma, Compassion knows no barriers. Seven grains spread across the ten directions, Offered universally to all worlds throughout the sand-like realms.

> <note>He handed the spoon with rice to the attendant to send over. Turning the spoon inward, he silently recited the mantra.</note>

> Om. May all beings be released from suffering. Svaha.

> The golden-winged Garuda, the spirits of the wild, the female demons and their children—all are filled with sweet dew.

> Om. Mudi Svaha. <note>Recite the mantra three times. Snap the fingers three times.</note>

> <note>In modern times, it's common to see people using hand gestures to depict Mount Sumeru, circling the food several times with their fingers, or even flipping their hands in various elaborate motions after circling. But when we check the scriptures and precepts, these practices find no basis in the canonical texts and completely lose the proper deportment. In principle, the correct way is to form the hand gesture with the left hand, offer the food with the right hand, and silently recite verses or mantras. According to the \*Nanhai Jigui\* (Record of Buddhism Sent Back from the South Seas), when Western-region monks gathered for meals, a seat for the holy sage was set up at the head, with a small table beside it holding a basin for offering food to the demon mother (Hariti). When food was served, offerings were first made to the holy sage, then to the assembly present, and finally to Hariti. There was no custom of each person making individual offerings. Now, following the ancient traditions of the East, although each person may make an offering, it should not be done with such elaborate and exaggerated gestures</note>.
