> Chapter 14: Abandoning Evil and Adding Good

> Suppose a practitioner is seated in tranquil meditation, and someone comes to strike them with fists, clubs, tiles, or stones. They should contemplate thus: "Both name and form are empty; the one who strikes and the one being struck are ultimately non-existent. From where does this arise? Who is the one harboring anger? Toward whom is this rage directed? It is due to my past unwholesome actions that I now encounter this adversity. If there were no name and form, there would be no cause for such misfortune. If I were to retaliate in anger against this person, the sources of resentment are countless and cannot all be repaid. It is like venomous snakes, centipedes, fleas, lice, mosquitoes, gnats, wasps, and bees—these creatures harass people, yet one cannot retaliate against them all. Even if one could eliminate all external afflictions, how could one possibly eradicate the four hundred and four illnesses and eighty kinds of parasites within the body? Therefore, one must subdue the inner mind, extinguish all defilements, and calm the will in tranquil meditation. This is what is called true practice."
