> When the practitioner is about to sleep, they should contemplate impermanence and the swift approach of death. Reflecting on the suffering and distress of birth and death, they should wash their hands and face, look around in all directions, and observe the stars at night to guard their mind. They should abandon laziness and resist the urge to sleep; if sleepiness persists, they should get up and walk, and if that does not help, they should change their sitting posture. They should envision light—even in mental darkness—by contemplating the three lights to illuminate both inner and outer awareness. Thus, it is said:

> Reflect on the suffering of life and death, Observe faults and look in all directions. Examine the light outside, Seek illumination from within. Destroy the darkness of drowsiness, Like the sun dispels the night. Even with eyes closed, You see more than when they are open.

> The practitioner constantly contemplates to see with clarity, day and night without distinction. They discern what is great and small, right and wrong, and the paths they lead to, traveling far and learning widely without exception. By contemplating in this way, they attain the eye of wisdom, seeing all things as equal, with nothing hidden, not even the pure abodes of the heavens. Thus it is said in verse:

> Though his eyes are closed, he sees as if wide awake, The vision from his meditation surpasses divine sight. He beholds all living beings throughout the world, And penetrates even the heavens, leaving nothing unseen.

> The practitioner, having attained the eye of wisdom, sees all the realms of suffering in every direction. It is like when a long rain finally clears, and a person with clear vision stands atop a mountain, gazing upon cities, provinces, towns, villages, people, trees, flowers, fruits, flowing streams, springs, lions, tigers, wolves, elephants, horses, sheep, deer, and all the wild beasts—their comings and goings, their movements and stillness, all are seen clearly. Thus it is said in verse:

> Just as a clear mirror and the open sky, When the rain has cleared and the sun shines bright, A person with clear vision standing on a high peak Can look down and see everything without obstruction. They observe cities, towns, and villages, And so too does the diligent practitioner, Seeing the world, its creatures, And the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and all beings.

> Practicing in this way, one perceives the three thousand realms, witnessing the births and deaths of beings and the destinations of their good and evil deeds. This is called the attainment of spiritual power. Then it is said in verse:

> Though there is the supreme taste of nectar, Seeing the virtue of the three thousand worlds surpasses it. Those who practice the path in accordance with the Buddha's teachings Swiftly attain spiritual powers without hindrance. The Buddha sees all purity universally, Out of compassion for all beings, he speaks of this, Resolving their roots from beginning to end, enabling swift liberation, Explaining with boundless meaning.
