> Chapter 17: Recollection of Past Lives

> Wisdom is the root and fang of virtue, The Dharma forms the blossom, merit the fruit. Liberation reveals itself, steadfast and unmoved— Now I take refuge in the great tree of the Buddha. From countless lives, virtue has grown, In past limitless ages, pure practice was cultivated. Knowing billions of former existences, The Buddha’s awakened mind strengthens my settled heart.

> Suppose a practitioner reflects within, thinking: "Where did I come from to obtain this human form?" With the clarity of divine vision, they see through their own heart, discerning whether their previous life was human or otherwise. It is like someone traveling from one town to another, recognizing the places they have been, the paths they have taken, and the spots where they have sat or risen. In the same way, the practitioner reflects on their past lives—the forms they have taken, their names, their qualities, their lifespans long or short, their food and drink, their clothing—and remembers them all. They see how they passed away there and were born here, how they ended here and arose there, and in this manner, they come to know countless past births and deaths. This is called the knowledge of past lives. Thus it is said in verse:

> With the divine eye, I observe the practice of cultivation, Knowing the countless lifetimes I have experienced, I see all my past bodies that could have been, Like looking at one's own reflection while riding a boat. I remember every place where the Buddha was born, I study the sutras and extract their essence, This is called "what was experienced in the past," With a wise mind, I gather the most essential truths.
