> 15\. Biographies of Nuns from Hun Mountain in Suzhou, Tang Dynasty

混山尼，失其名，住蘇州混山縣界。少小入道，常誦法華經，每日兩徧，二十餘載曾無懈廢。此尼容貌妍詳，見者思戀。至永昌元年，縣錄司姓朱，遂起惡心，橫加非望，尼雅志貞確，意不從之。朱乃惱亂寺眾，破壞常住，尼等不知何計得免斯苦。持經尼云：「此法華經，無上妙寶，諸天鬼神，共所護持。佛語真實，何無靈驗？」作是念已，即著淨衣入佛殿，燒香發願。其後，錄司假託別由，而來寄宿，心懷異意，方欲向尼房去。少選之間，忽覺半體酸痛，男根遂落，徧身流汗，即發癩瘡，眉毛鬢鬚一時俱墮。錄司感斯惡報，生大怖畏，狂心頓歇，立命歸返，悲悔萬方，竟不痊損。尼見一念之誠，蠲諸魔礙，益堅道意，畢命行持。

> There was a nun in Hunshan County, Suzhou, whose name has been lost. She entered the monastic life while still young and constantly recited the Lotus Sutra, completing it twice each day. For over twenty years, she never slackened in this practice. This nun was beautiful in appearance, and those who saw her were captivated. In the first year of the Yongchang era, a local official named Zhu developed wicked intentions toward her and made improper advances. The nun, however, was steadfast in her pure resolve and would not consent to his desires. Zhu, enraged, began to harass the monastic community and damage the temple property. The nuns did not know how to escape this suffering. The nun who recited the sutra thought to herself, "This Lotus Sutra is the supreme and wondrous treasure, protected by all the heavenly beings and spirits. The Buddha's words are true—how could they lack spiritual power?" Having formed this thought, she put on clean robes, entered the Buddha hall, lit incense, and made a vow. Later, the official Zhu found a pretext to come and lodge at the temple, still harboring his improper intentions. Just as he was about to head toward the nun's quarters, he suddenly felt half his body seized with sharp pain. His male organ then fell away, his entire body broke out in sweat, and he was immediately covered in leprous sores. His eyebrows, sideburns, and beard all fell out at once. Struck by this severe retribution, Zhu was filled with great terror. His deluded mind abruptly ceased, and he immediately ordered his return home. Though he repented bitterly in countless ways, his condition never healed. The nun, seeing how a single sincere thought could dispel such demonic obstacles, strengthened her resolve even more and devoted herself to her practice for the rest of her life.
