### 三四、唐瑞州末山尼了然傳

> Biography of Liaoran, the Nun of Moshān in Rui Prefecture, Tang Dynasty

了然，姓氏里居不傳。參高安大愚禪師，悟徹玄旨，機辯不窮。住瑞州末山，開堂接眾，宗師法匠，皆時造其門。一日，有灌溪和尚到來，問曰：「若道得相當即住，不然，即推倒禪牀。」便入堂內。然遣侍者問上座：「為遊山來？為佛法來？」溪曰：「為佛法來。」然乃陞座，溪上參，然問：「上座今日離何處？」曰：「路口。」然曰：「何不蓋卻？」溪無對，始禮拜。問：「如何是末山？」然曰：「不露頂。」曰：「如何是末山主？」然曰：「非男女相。」溪乃喝曰：「何不變去？」然曰：「不是神，不是鬼，變箇甚麼？」溪於是服膺，作園頭三載。僧至參，然曰：「太󰡖縷生。」曰：「雖然如此，且是師子兒。」然曰：「既是師子兒，為甚麼被文殊騎？」僧無對。問：「如何是古佛心？」然曰：「世界傾壞。」曰：「世界為甚麼傾壞？」然曰：「寧無我身。」

> Her surname and place of origin are not recorded. She studied under Zen Master Dayu of Gao'an, thoroughly awakening to the profound essence, and her skillful responses were inexhaustible. She resided at Moshan in Ruizhou, where she opened a hall to receive practitioners. Masters and teachers of the lineage all visited her door in their time. One day, the monk Guanxi arrived and said, "If you can speak appropriately, I will stay. Otherwise, I will overturn the meditation seat." He then entered the hall. She sent an attendant to ask him, "Have you come to travel the mountains, or have you come for the Dharma?" Guanxi said, "I have come for the Dharma." She then ascended the seat, and Guanxi came forward to pay respects. She asked, "Where did you depart from today?" He replied, "The crossroads." She said, "Why not cover it over?" Guanxi had no reply and began to bow. He asked, "What is Moshan?" She said, "It does not reveal its peak." He asked, "What is the master of Moshan?" She said, "Not a man, not a woman." Guanxi then shouted, "Why not transform?" She said, "I am not a spirit, not a ghost—what would I transform into?" Guanxi was then convinced and served as the garden keeper for three years. A monk came to pay respects, and she said, "Too coarse and unrefined." The monk said, "Even so, I am still a lion's cub." She said, "If you are a lion's cub, why are you ridden by Manjushri?" The monk had no reply. He asked, "What is the ancient Buddha's mind?" She said, "The world collapses." He asked, "Why does the world collapse?" She said, "Better to have no self."
