### 四六、宋關西某庵尼真如傳

> Biography of Zhenru, a Nun from a Certain Nunnery in the Western Pass during the Song Dynasty

真如，關西王氏女。早選入官，以才能為內夫人。隸喬貴妃閣。喬氏崇佛，容其剪髮，參道四方。入閩，與大慧禪師小溪法會。一日，作偈曰：「平地偶然著顛，起來都無可說。若人更問如何，笑指清風明月。」以之呈證，慧欣然許可。特為對眾小參，說偈曰：「今日如師姑，昔日王師父。身居羅綺叢，只著麤麻布。開口便高談，嫌佛不肯做。跳出是非坑，截斷生死路。入虎穴魔宮，心中無怕怖。杜撰八陽經，自有三千部。愛吟落韻詩，偏不勒字數。行腳走天下，參禪無所悟。近日到雲門，一時都敗露。錯認碓嘴頭，喚作冬瓜瓠。如此作師姑，勸君少喫醋。更有一處乖，且道那一處？嘉州大象喫炙麩，陝府鐵牛撐破肚。」如之施為，可概見矣。

> Zhenru was a woman of the Wang family from Guanxi. Selected early for palace service, she became an Inner Consort due to her talent, serving in Consort Qiao's quarters. Consort Qiao revered Buddhism and permitted her to cut her hair and travel widely to seek the Way. She entered Fujian and attended the Dharma assembly of Chan Master Dahui at Xiaoxi. One day, she composed a verse: > By chance I stumbled on level ground; > Rising up, there is nothing to say. > If someone asks further how it is, > I smile and point to the clear breeze and bright moon. She presented this for verification, and Dahui joyfully approved it. He specially gave a small public talk for the assembly, reciting a verse: > Today she is a nun, > Yesterday she was Master Wang. > Dwelling amid silks and brocades, > She wore only coarse hemp cloth. > Opening her mouth, she speaks loftily, > Disdaining to act like a Buddha. > Leaping out of the pit of right and wrong, > She cuts off the road of birth and death. > Entering the tiger's den, the demon's palace, > In her heart there is no fear. > Improvising the Eight Yang Sutra, > She herself has three thousand volumes. > Fond of chanting verses that break rhyme, > She especially refuses to count the words. > Wandering on foot across the world, > In Chan practice she has nothing attained. > Recently arriving at Yunmen, > All at once everything is exposed. > Mistaking the pestle's head, > She calls it a winter melon gourd. > Being such a nun, > I advise you to eat less vinegar. > There is yet another oddity— > Tell me, what is that place? > The great elephant of Jiazhou eats roasted bran, > The iron ox of Shanfu bursts its belly. From this, her conduct and character can be generally seen.
