### 四五、宋蘇州資壽寺尼慧照傳

> Biography of Huizhao, a Nun from Zishou Temple in Suzhou, Song Dynasty

慧照，字無際，張侍郎淵道之女。初居家日，有相者過之，曰：「此寶座說法人也。」後果為尼，依資壽無著落髮。無著示以宗門下事，苦志力究，雖有所入，仍未徹底。時杭之徑山為海內禪窟，大慧杲老主之，訪道之士，不絕於途。其師嘗親依座下，破除疑情，照亦時有所聞，心焉嚮往。特攜瓶缽登山，請求開示，久之領悟玄機，得受記莂。歸後，無著畀以法席，命其代座接眾。化導之盛，不減乃師風範。

> Hui Zhao, also known as Wuji, was the daughter of Zhang Yuan Dao, a high-ranking official. During her youth at home, a fortune-teller once visited and remarked, "This one is destined to teach the Dharma from the lion's throne." Indeed, she later became a nun, shaving her head under the guidance of Master Wuzhuo of Zishou Temple. Wuzhuo introduced her to the profound teachings of the Chan school. With unwavering determination, she delved deeply into them. Though she gained some insight, she felt her understanding was not yet complete. At that time, Jing Mountain in Hangzhou was renowned as a center of Chan practice, led by the great master Dahui Zonggao. Seekers of the Way flocked there continuously. Hui Zhao’s own teacher had once studied under Dahui, resolving his doubts and deepening his realization. Hearing of this, Hui Zhao yearned to go there herself. Carrying her alms bowl and staff, she journeyed to the mountain to seek guidance. After a period of dedicated practice, she grasped the profound truth and received the master’s seal of approval. Upon her return, Wuzhuo entrusted her with the teaching seat, instructing her to guide others in his stead. Her skill in teaching and transforming students was no less remarkable than her own teacher’s.
