### 四八、宋溫州淨居寺尼妙道傳

> Biography of Miaodao, a Nun of Jingju Temple in Wenzhou during the Song Dynasty

妙道，延平尚書黃公裳之女，參徑山大慧禪師得法，住溫州淨居寺。開堂日，乃曰：「問話且止，直饒有傾湫之辯，倒嶽之機，衲僧門下一點用不著。且佛未出世時，一事全無。我祖西來，便有許多建立，列剎相望，星分派別，以至今日，累及兒孫。遂使山僧於人天大眾前，無風起浪，向第二義門通箇消息。語默該不盡底，彌亘大方；言詮說不及處，徧周沙界。通身是眼，覿面當機；電卷星馳，如何湊泊？有時一喝，生殺全威；有時一喝，佛祖莫辨；有時一喝，八面受敵；有時一喝，自救不了。且道那一喝是生殺全威？那一喝是佛祖莫辨？那一喝是八面受敵？那一喝是自救不了？若向這裏薦得，堪報不報之恩；脫或未然，山僧無夢說夢去也。」拈起拂子曰：「還見麼？若見，被見刺所障。」擊禪牀曰：「還聞麼？若聞被聲塵所惑，直饒離見絕聞，正是二乘小果。跳出一步，蓋色騎聲，全放全收，主賓互換。所以道欲識佛性義，當觀時節因緣。敢問諸人，即今是甚麼時節？蕩蕩仁風扶聖化，熙熙和氣助昇平。」擲拂子，下座。尼問：「如何是佛？」道曰：「非佛。」曰：「如何是佛法大意？」道曰：「骨底骨董。」問：「言無展事，語不投機時如何？」道曰：「未屙已前，墮坑落壍。」

> Miaodao, daughter of Minister Huang Shang of Yanping, attained realization under the guidance of Chan Master Dahui at Mount Jing. She resided at Jingju Temple in Wenzhou. On the day of her inaugural Dharma talk, she said: "Let us set aside questions for now. Even if one possesses the eloquence to drain oceans and the skill to topple mountains, none of it is of any use in the monk's gate. Before the Buddha appeared in the world, there was not a single thing. But when our Patriarch came from the West, many establishments arose: monasteries stood in view of one another, spreading like stars and branching into lineages—all the way down to today, burdening his descendants. Thus, this mountain monk, before this assembly of humans and devas, stirs waves without wind and conveys a message through the gate of secondary meaning. What is beyond speech and silence pervades the great expanse; what words cannot reach extends throughout the sands of the world. The whole body is an eye, meeting the occasion directly; like lightning flashing and stars racing, how can one grasp it? Sometimes one shout holds the complete power of life and death; sometimes one shout leaves even buddhas and patriarchs unable to distinguish; sometimes one shout faces enemies on all sides; sometimes one shout cannot even save oneself. Now tell me: which shout is the complete power of life and death? Which shout leaves buddhas and patriarchs unable to distinguish? Which shout faces enemies on all sides? Which shout cannot even save itself? If you can see clearly here, you can repay the kindness that is beyond repayment. If not, this mountain monk is just talking about dreams in a dream." She lifted her whisk and said, "Do you see? If you see, you are obstructed by the thorn of seeing." She struck the meditation seat and said, "Do you hear? If you hear, you are deluded by the dust of sound. Even if you transcend seeing and hearing, that is merely the small fruit of the Two Vehicles. Leap out one step further: cover form and ride sound, fully release and fully gather, host and guest interchange. Thus it is said: 'To understand the meaning of Buddha-nature, observe the season and conditions.' I ask you all: what season is it right now? Vast is the benevolent wind supporting the sage's transformation; bright is the harmonious energy aiding the peace and prosperity." She threw down the whisk and descended from the seat. A nun asked, "What is Buddha?" Miaodao said, "Not Buddha." The nun asked, "What is the essential meaning of the Buddha's teaching?" Miaodao said, "A jumble of old bones." The nun asked, "When words don't unfold the matter and speech doesn't hit the mark, what then?" Miaodao said, "Before you've even relieved yourself, you've already fallen into the pit."
