### 四九、宋遂寧香山尼佛通傳

> Biography of Nun Fotong from Xiangshan, Suining, Song Dynasty

佛通，遂寧高氏女。童真入佛，志希賢聖，因誦妙法蓮華經，有所省發，未能自肯。聞石門元易禪師之道，特往參謁。乃曰：「成都喫不得也。」門拈拄杖打出，通忽悟曰：「榮者自榮，謝者自謝。秋露春風，好不著便。」門拂袖歸方丈，通亦不顧而出。由此道俗景從，住遂寧香山，大宏宗旨，得法者甚眾。

> Fotong was a woman of the Gao family from Suining. She entered the Buddhist path in her youth, aspiring to the ways of the sages. While reciting the Lotus Sutra, she experienced a moment of insight, yet remained uncertain. Hearing of the teachings of Chan Master Yuan Yi of Shimen, she went to seek his guidance. Upon meeting him, she said, "In Chengdu, one cannot eat." The master picked up his staff and struck her out. In that instant, Fotong awakened and exclaimed, "What flourishes flourishes on its own; what fades fades on its own. The autumn dew and spring breeze—how naturally they come and go!" The master flicked his sleeve and returned to his quarters. Fotong paid no further mind and left. From then on, both monastics and laypeople flocked to her. She resided at Xiangshan in Suining, widely propagating the essential teachings, and many received the Dharma through her.
