> 50\. Biography of Nun Wenzhao of Miaozhan Temple in Pingjiang, Song Dynasty

文照，號慈鑑，溫陵人，姓董氏。十七得度，徧迹祖闈，獲證於甘露仲宣長老。蘇州郡守陳公師錫聞其道德，命居妙湛，開濟度門。後五遷道場，皆革律為禪，吳中尼剎禪林，實始於照也。太宰鄭公居仁奏賜法號并紫方袍，極一時之榮。其上堂法語妙義雋永，燈史所傳者，只一則而已，今為錄之。「靈源不動，歷歷孤明，是誰光彩？若道真如實際，大似好肉剜瘡；更作祖意商量，正是迷頭認影。老胡四十九年說夢即且止，僧堂裏憍陳如上座為儞諸人舉覺底，還記得麼？」良久曰：「惜取眉毛好。」

> Wenzhao, known as Cijian, was from Wenling and belonged to the Dong family. At seventeen, she took monastic vows and traveled extensively to study under various masters, ultimately attaining realization under Elder Zhongxuan of Ganlu. Chen Shixi, the prefect of Suzhou, heard of her virtue and wisdom and invited her to reside at Miaozhan Temple, where she opened the gate of liberation for others. Later, she moved to five different monastic centers, transforming each from a Vinaya-based practice to a Chan tradition. Thus, she was the one who truly established Chan practice in the nunneries of the Wu region. The Grand Councilor Zheng Juren petitioned the court to grant her an honorary Dharma name and a purple robe, an honor that was unparalleled in her time. Her Dharma talks were profound and meaningful, yet only one record has been preserved in the lamp histories. It is recorded here: "The spiritual source is unmoving, clearly and distinctly luminous—whose radiance is this? If you call it the true suchness or ultimate reality, it’s like cutting healthy flesh to treat a sore. If you try to discuss it in terms of ancestral meaning, you’re merely mistaking a shadow for your own head. Old Hu’s forty-nine years of speaking in dreams can be set aside for now. Do you still remember what Venerable Kaundinya in the monks’ hall has been pointing out for all of you?" After a long pause, she said, "Take good care of your eyebrows."
