> Sixty: Biography of the Nun Yang Shu'an of Dezhou in the Song Dynasty

> Bai Fo was from Dezhou, surnamed Mei, and the niece of the Chen family. She had two elder sisters, making her the third daughter. From a young age, she admired the Buddhist teachings and, together with her sisters, vowed not to marry. They left home to travel and study, visiting many famous temples, practicing with diligence and courage, and each attained insight. Returning to their hometown, they continued to live together, spending their days discussing the nature of non-arising in harmony. Their disciples revered them as the Three Sages, providing for all their needs without fail. In the fifth year of the Shaoxing era, they all passed away in meditation under a large poplar tree. The villagers cut down the tree and placed it in the river, where it floated upstream against the current. They carved the wood into statues and prayed to them, and the incense offerings have continued ever since.
