### 六一、宋松江寂照院尼如湛傳

> Biography of Nun Ruzhan of Song Dynasty's Jizhao Monastery in Songjiang

如湛，號渾源，湖州王氏女。母曹氏，持奉圓通大士。湛在襁褓間，即能道圓通品中語。隨父防禦佐金陵戎幕，遂落髮於清涼寺尼僧智圓所。能通華嚴、圓覺、法華諸大部經，銳志參訪耆宿。慶元間，至華亭，禮船子塔。時安康郡夫人號普明居士者，與無住居士二人留心大乘，得湛談論，洞明心印。郡中適寂照院虛席，請湛開堂。一日，與二居士泛舟城南，至蓮花蕩，見水天交接。湛招之曰：「此地塵跡不到，可建立梵剎。」即鳩工庀材，果得神龍窟，遂定基興建，檀施雲集。不數月而寺告成。

> Ruzhan, also known as Hunyuan, was the daughter of the Wang family in Huzhou. Her mother, Lady Cao, devoutly worshipped the Bodhisattva of Perfect Penetration. Even in her infancy, Ruzhan could recite passages from the Sutra of Perfect Penetration. When her father served as a military advisor in Jinling, she took monastic vows under the nun Zhiyuan at Qingliang Temple. She mastered major scriptures such as the Avatamsaka, Perfect Enlightenment, and Lotus Sutras, and diligently sought guidance from venerable elders. During the Qingyuan era, she traveled to Huating to pay homage at the stupa of Master Chuanzi. At that time, the Lady of Ankang Prefecture, known as the lay practitioner Puming, and the lay practitioner Wuzhu, both devoted to the Mahayana path, engaged in discussions with Ruzhan and attained profound insight into the mind-seal. When a vacancy arose at the Jizhao Monastery in the prefecture, they invited Ruzhan to serve as abbess. One day, while boating with the two lay practitioners south of the city, they reached Lotus Marsh, where the water met the sky. Ruzhan pointed and said, "This place is untouched by worldly traces—it is suitable for establishing a monastery." They immediately gathered workers and materials, and indeed discovered the Dragon's Grotto, where they laid the foundation and began construction. Donations poured in like clouds, and within a few months, the monastery was completed.
