### 六五、宋西湖五雲山尼楊淑芳傳

> Sixty-Five: Biography of Nun Yang Shufang from Wuyun Mountain, West Lake, Song Dynasty

楊淑芳，西湖樵家女。理宗選妃日，賈似道匿為己妾，即德裕太學生百字令中所指新塘楊柳也。有無名氏題壁云：「山上樓台湖上船，平章醉後懶朝天。羽書莫報樊城急，新得蛾眉正少年。」淑芳亦知必敗，營別業以遁跡焉。木綿之後，自度為尼，罕有知者。詞數闋，今錄其浣溪紗云：「散步山前春草香，朱欄綠水遶吟廊。花枝驚墮繡衣裳。或定或搖江上柳，為鸞為鳳月中篁。為誰掩抑鎖雲牕。」更漏子云：「墨痕香，紅蠟淚點點，愁人離思。桐葉落，蓼花殘，鴈聲天外寒。五雲嶺，九溪塢，待到秋來，更苦風淅淅、水淙淙，不教蓬徑通。」今五雲山下，九溪塢內，尚有尼庵。

> Yang Shufang was the daughter of a woodcutter by West Lake. On the day Emperor Lizong was selecting his consorts, Jia Sidao hid her away and took her as his own concubine—she was the "willow of Xintang" mentioned in the student De Yu's "Song of a Hundred Words." An anonymous poem inscribed on a wall read: "Pavilions on the hill, boats upon the lake, The Chancellor, drunk, neglects the morning court. Urgent reports from Fancheng go unheeded— He has just won a youthful, lovely consort." Shufang herself knew disaster was inevitable and prepared a separate retreat to hide away. After the fall of the Southern Song, she took the tonsure and became a nun, with few aware of her identity. Several of her lyrics survive; here we record her "Silk-Washing Stream": "Strolling before the hills, spring grass sweet, Red rails, green water winding past the verse-laden hall. A blossom startles, falls upon embroidered gown. Now still, now swaying—riverside willows; Like phoenix, like luan—bamboo in moonlight. For whom is the clouded window latched and hushed?" And her "Song of the Water Clock": "Ink’s lingering scent, red candle’s tears— Dot by dot, sorrow parts the pining heart. Paulownia leaves fall, knotweed blooms fade, Wild geese cry, cold beyond the sky. Five Cloud Ridge, Nine Stream Valley— Waiting for autumn, only deeper grief. Wind soughs softly, water murmurs on, Leaving no path through the overgrown lane." To this day, below Five Cloud Ridge within Nine Stream Valley, a nunnery still stands.
