> Biography of Zhiwu, Nun of Yuan Shaoxing Daqing Temple

> Zhiwu, also known as Liaoan, was a woman from the Wang family of Fuzhou. Orphaned at a young age, she expressed her wish to leave home and become a monastic at the age of eleven. While reciting the Vimalakirti Sutra, she came upon the line, "All Buddha lands are also empty," and in that moment, she experienced a sudden, profound awakening. She later went to visit Master Xin of Beishan, a disciple of Xuefeng in Fuzhou. Master Xin asked her, "Venerable one, where do you reside?" She replied, "I do not abide by the banks of the Nantai River." Xin pressed, "Then where, ultimately, do you abide?" Zhiwu did not respond, and simply began to leave. Xin shouted after her, "Why are you running off? You deserve a taste of this mountain monk's staff!" Hearing this, her face flushed and sweat broke out on her brow. The next day, she returned to seek guidance, asking, "What fault was there in my response to you yesterday?" Xin sternly retorted, "Coming back here to look for faults!" At this, she was instantly liberated and said, "The bright moon illuminates the night traveler." Xin turned to the other monastics and remarked, "Observe her—her capacity is extraordinary." He then sealed her understanding with a verse, which included the lines: "If we meet and you ask of the matter within, The wind churns the Luo River, waves beat against the sky." Later, she resided at Daqing Temple in Shaoxing. Ascending the teaching seat, she said: "Heaven hangs the twelve railings at its corners, Wind fills the three thousandfold world. Feverish vexation turns into a pure realm, The meditative mind suddenly awakens to true emptiness." Leaning on her staff, she added, "Is there anything more to discuss?" On another occasion, she said: "Under the Great Sun's gate, every day is an autumn triad; Before the Hall of Bright Moon, each moment is a summer nine. The ancients spoke this way, yet they couldn't avoid settling here. Daqing, however, is not like that: The mountain turns—you doubt there's a path; The stream bends—another village appears." Again, she taught: "Willow catkins drift on the wind, apricot blossoms bathe in rain— What fine vitality! You must grasp it now!" Striking the meditation seat with her whisk, she exclaimed, "Hah! Thirty years from now, don't get it wrong."
