### 七〇、元燕京藥師庵尼性悅傳

> Seventy: Biography of Nun Xingyue of Yaoshi Nunnery in Yanjing

性悅，蒙古人，姓高麗氏，為中書平章闊闊歹之側室，有賢行。平章死，誓不貳適。正室子拜馬朶兒赤說其色，欲妻之而不可得，乃以其父所有大答納環子獻於太師伯顏，此物蓋伯顏所屬意者。伯顏喜問所欲，遂白前事。伯顏特為奏聞，奉旨命拜馬朶兒赤收繼小母高麗氏。高麗氏夜與親母踰垣而出，投藥師庵削髮為尼。伯顏怒，以為故違聖旨。拜奏命省臺，洎侍正府官鞫問，諸官奉命惟謹，鍛鍊備極慘酷。性悅無他言，惟持觀音聖號不絕口，速求其死。時國公闊里吉思於鞫問官中獨秉權力，侍正府都事帖木兒不花數致語曰：「誰無妻子？安能相守至死！得有如此守節者，莫大之幸。而反坐以罪，恐非我治朝之盛典也。」國公悟，為言於伯顏之前，宛曲解釋，其事遂已。性悅自慶更生，堅發道意，奉大士尤虔。凡蔬果糖餞，必先至誠獻供，而後始食。年垂七十，入寂。

> Xingyue was a Mongol woman of the Goryeo clan, a concubine of Kuo-kuo-tai, the Grand Councilor of the Central Secretariat, known for her virtuous conduct. After the Grand Councilor's death, she vowed not to remarry. His legitimate son, Baima Duo'erchi, captivated by her beauty, sought to marry her but was refused. In response, he presented a large Danahuanzi ring—a piece coveted by the Grand Preceptor Bayan—to him. Pleased, Bayan asked what he desired, and Baima Duo'erchi explained the situation. Bayan then petitioned the emperor, who issued an edict ordering Baima Duo'erchi to marry his father's concubine, the Goryeo woman. That night, Xingyue fled over the wall with her mother and sought refuge in the Yaoshi Nunnery, where she shaved her head and became a nun. Enraged by her defiance of the imperial decree, Bayan ordered the provincial authorities and the Imperial Guard to interrogate her. The officials, obeying strictly, subjected her to extreme and cruel torture. Xingyue offered no defense but continuously recited the sacred name of Guanyin, praying only for a swift death. Among the interrogators, Duke Kuo-li-chi-ssu held particular authority. Tieh-mu-erh Pu-hua, an official of the Imperial Guard, repeatedly reminded him, "Who does not have a wife? How many can remain faithful unto death? To have someone who guards her chastity so steadfastly is a great blessing. To punish her for this would hardly befit the noble laws of our dynasty." The duke, persuaded, spoke to Bayan on her behalf, skillfully explaining the situation, and the matter was dropped. Grateful for her reprieve, Xingyue deepened her commitment to the Buddhist path, venerating Guanyin with especial devotion. She would always offer fruits, vegetables, and sweets with utmost sincerity before partaking herself. She passed away peacefully at nearly seventy years of age.
