> Seventy-two: Biography of Nun Yang Miaoxi of West Tianmu Mountain, Hangzhou, Yuan Dynasty (with attached: Biography of Plum Bl

> Yang Miaoxi was a palace lady of the Song dynasty who followed the teachings of Laozi and became a female Daoist priest, residing in Qiantang. She lived as a neighbor to the Zhongfeng monk's family. At first, the monk was unwilling to live a worldly life, which troubled his parents. Yang, recognizing that the monk was no ordinary person, advised his parents to allow him to leave home and become a monk. When the monk shaved his head, she also provided him with a monk’s certificate, robes, and other necessities. Moreover, she asked for a few strands of his shaved hair, which she stored in an incense box and enshrined in a quiet room. After several years, relics emerged from the hair, growing in number over time until they accumulated to more than fifty, sparkling in five colors. From then on, Yang abandoned her previous studies and turned to Buddhism, eventually requesting to become a nun for the rest of her life. In the winter of the Yuantong year, during the reign of Emperor Shun of Yuan, she entrusted the monk Yue Zhi to enshrine the hair relics in a stupa at Yunju Convent. At that time, there was a nun known as Plum Blossom Nun, whose real name was lost. She earnestly sought the Way, traveling far and wide to visit wise teachers, yet after decades, she had found nothing. One day, she happened to see plum blossoms in full bloom and suddenly experienced a great awakening. She composed a verse: All day I searched for spring but found no trace, My straw sandals trod over clouds on mountain peaks. Returning home, I smile and pinch a plum blossom to smell— Spring has already arrived, full and complete on the branch. These were words of one who had seen her true nature.
