### 七三、元某縣長明庵尼妙湛傳

> Biography of Miaozhan, a Nun from Changming Temple in Yuan County

妙湛，大德間人。管夫人有長明庵圖，庵居曠野，垣內有屋三層，橫廊通門徑，豎杆懸一燈，所謂長明也。旁有石蓮台，作施鳥食者。垣外二長松下蔭，又一樹參之。門外坡臨水際，水間復有坡，樹墨氣高古，無兒女子態。夫人欵云：「大德九年冬十一月廿五日，仲姬管道昇作。有比丘尼妙湛詩云：『雙樹陰陰落翠巖，一燈千古破幽關。也知諸法皆如幻，甘老煙霞水石間。』小行書題其上。妙湛想即庵畫中人也。」

> Miaozhan was a virtuous nun. Lady Guan painted a picture of the Ever-Bright Nunnery. The nunnery was situated in a vast wilderness. Within its walls stood three layers of buildings, with a horizontal corridor connecting the gate and the path. A vertical pole held up a lantern—this was the so-called "ever-bright" lamp. Beside it was a stone lotus pedestal used for feeding birds. Outside the walls, two tall pine trees cast their shade, with another tree standing among them. Outside the gate, a slope led down to the water's edge, and beyond the water was another slope. The ink-wash trees conveyed an ancient and lofty spirit, free from any delicate or feminine air. Lady Guan inscribed it: "On the twenty-fifth day of the eleventh month in the winter of the ninth year of the Dade era, painted by Zhongji, Guan Daosheng. A nun named Miaozhan composed a poem: 'Two trees cast their shade upon the verdant cliffs; One lamp illuminates the ages, piercing the dark pass. Though I know all phenomena are but illusion, I gladly grow old amidst mists, clouds, water, and stone.'" The poem was written in small running script above the painting. Miaozhan was likely the nun depicted in the nunnery painting.
