### 七六、明莒州某庵尼悟蓮傳

> 76\. Biography of Nun Wulian of a Certain Convent in Juzhou

悟蓮，姓夏氏，名雲英，山東莒州人。幼聰慧，五歲能誦孝經，七歲讀佛經，法華、楞嚴皆能成熟。年十三，選為周世子宮人。世子即位，是為憲王，元妃呂氏薨，遂專內政，國有大事，多與裁決。憲王嘗令作詩吟鶻，悟蓮以箴進，勸王推廣德心，勿畜此以傷生類也。年二十二，有疾，求為尼，受菩薩戒，習金剛密乘。不二載，洞明內典，其詩清峭，人爭傳誦。立秋云：「秋風吹雨過南樓，一夜新涼是立秋。寶鴨香消沉火冷，侍兒閒自理空侯。」雨晴云：「海棠初種竹新移，流水潺潺入水池。春雨乍晴風日好，一聲啼鳥過花枝。」秋夜即事云：「西風颯颯動羅幃，初夜焚香下玉墀。禮罷真如庭院靜，銀缸高照看圍棋。」永樂十六年六月，作偈示眾，吉祥而逝，年二十有四。有法華經讚七篇，及清端閣詩卷行世。

> Wulian, whose family name was Xia and given name Yunying, was from Juzhou in Shandong. From a young age, she was intelligent and perceptive. At five, she could recite the Classic of Filial Piety; by seven, she was reading Buddhist scriptures, mastering texts like the Lotus Sutra and the Śūraṅgama Sūtra. At thirteen, she was chosen to enter the household of the heir to the Zhou principality. When the heir succeeded as Prince Xian, and after the passing of his principal consort Lady Lü, Wulian took charge of internal affairs. On major matters of state, her counsel was often sought in decision-making. Once, Prince Xian asked her to compose a poem about falcons. Instead, Wulian presented a verse of admonition, urging the prince to broaden his compassionate heart and not keep creatures that harm living beings. At twenty-two, she fell ill and requested to become a nun. She received the Bodhisattva Precepts and practiced the Vajrayana teachings. Within less than two years, she gained profound insight into the Buddhist canon. Her poetry was pure and striking, widely circulated and recited. \*\*On the Start of Autumn\*\* The autumn wind blows rain past the southern tower, Overnight, a fresh coolness marks the start of autumn. The incense in the duck-shaped burner fades, the fire cools, A maidservant idly tunes the konghou. \*\*After Rain Clears\*\* Newly planted crabapple, bamboo just transplanted, A murmuring stream flows into the garden pool. After spring rain, the sky clears, breeze and sun are gentle— A single birdcall passes over flowering branches. \*\*Events on an Autumn Night\*\* The west wind rustles through the silk bed curtains, At early night, I descend the jade steps to burn incense. After paying homage to Suchness, the courtyard grows still— By the tall silver lamp, I watch a game of Go. In the sixth month of the sixteenth year of the Yongle era, she composed a gatha to show the assembly, then passed away peacefully and auspiciously at the age of twenty-four. Her works include \*Seven Praises of the Lotus Sutra\* and the poetry collection \*From the Pure and Upright Pavilion\*, which have been circulated in the world.
