> Eighty-Seven: Biography of Ming Dynasty Nun Wudao of Shanyang Purple Bamboo Hermitage

> Wudao, whose secular name was Buxu, was a woman from the Guo family of Yancheng. In her youth, she was betrothed, but upon reaching marriageable age, she vowed not to marry and instead became a monastic at the Purple Bamboo Nunnery in Cheqiao Town, Shanyang. Later, she moved to the southern bank of the Jingxi River. She cultivated herself with pure discipline and austere practices, strictly upholding the precepts. After midday, she would not consume any food. Aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land, she diligently recited the Buddha's name, reciting and then bowing, bowing and then reciting again. In all her daily conduct—walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—her practice was nearly uninterrupted. Although she did not permanently seclude herself, she often refrained from leaving her dwelling, so the villagers rarely saw her face. They all called her the "Transformed Bodhisattva." Wudao was born in the year 1596 (the 24th year of the Wanli reign, year Bing Shen) and passed away in 1645 (the 2nd year of the Shunzhi reign, year Yi You), at the age of fifty. The Jinshi scholar Wu Yunqian from Shu composed an inscription for her stupa, which was built beside the nunnery.
