> Biography of Tongguang, Nun of Qijiang Yinshan Nunnery

> Tongguang, also known as Wuche, was from Jiangyin and belonged to the Miao family. She was the wife of Yang Zhenling and the mother of the National Teacher Dajue Yulin. Zhenling practiced the teachings of Yunqi and was known as Guangfu, having passed away earlier. At the age of nineteen, the National Teacher left home to become a monk under the guidance of the elder Tianyin at Mount Qing in Yixing. After attaining enlightenment, he bid farewell to return and visit Mount Qing, where he presented a verse that included the lines: "When you personally witness the perfection within, even white hair must be cut away." Later, when Tianyin passed away, he entrusted the National Teacher with the abbotship of Bao’en Temple in Huzhou. His mother, longing to enter the path of cultivation, was supported by the National Teacher, who, in accordance with her wishes, performed the tonsure and ordination for her before the statue of Tianyin at Shifang Temple on the river. He then welcomed her back to Bao’en Temple to care for her, much like the story of Zhou’s mother at White Lotus Peak on Mount Dong. The National Teacher composed a verse that said: "Cultivation lies in practice, not in words; All matters must be decisively severed. This time, it is like cutting a handful of silk— One cut, and all is completely resolved. The radiant halo atop the head encompasses the ten directions; From now on, it shall never again be obscured. It is not that this monk lightly ordains his kin— Ten years ago, the master already foretold it. In an instant, the demeanor of a true practitioner is fully attained, With the Dharma name Tongguang and the title Wuche. Not following the paths others tread, Ensuring each step leads to the land of lotus blossoms." From then on, disciples respectfully addressed her as the Great Teacher-Mother. Whenever the National Teacher paid his respects, he would humbly bow in return, adhering to the Buddhist precept that parents should not receive bows from their ordained children. He extended this practice to all monks and laypeople alike. On the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, he would not open his door, and during the New Year and half-month periods, he would sit in meditation and avoid visitors, all to honor the Great Teacher-Mother and spare others the trouble of paying respects. She also occasionally resided at Yushan Temple in Jiangyin, where she devoted herself to rigorous cultivation for over a decade. Delving deeply into the ultimate truth, she attained profound realization but remained humble and unassuming, never flaunting her accomplishments. On the sixteenth day of the twelfth month in the tenth year of the Shunzhi reign (1653), she passed away peacefully at the age of seventy-one, having been a nun for twelve years. She was buried behind Canghai Temple on Mount Yu, with a pagoda named Daci erected in her honor.
