> Biography of Dengling, a Nun at Yanjing Nunnery in Guangzhou during the Qing Dynasty

> Deng Ling was from Panyu, Guangzhou. His lay surname was Deng, and his mother's maiden name was Hong. At the beginning of the Qing dynasty, he left home to become a monk. Morning and evening, he performed prostrations and recited sutras, with his heart firmly set on the Pure Land. He ceaselessly recited the great name of the Bodhisattva. On the twenty-third day of the seventh month in the year Gengyin of the Shunzhi reign (1650), during his prostrations and recitations late into the night, the four walls around him were utterly silent, and he felt as if he were alone in the world. It was as if he held something in his palm. Without thinking, he brought it to his mouth and swallowed it. When he opened his fist, three grains remained in his hand, their color a vivid red, resembling cinnabar. From that moment on, he stopped eating entirely, yet felt no hunger or thirst. His practice of prostrations and recitation remained as diligent as ever. Afterwards, he occasionally ate some seasonal fruit, but the seven grains never touched his lips again. His body remained as before, and his spirit even seemed more vigorous. He resided at the Yanjing Nunnery in Guangzhou.
