> Biography of Nun Huiguang of Miaohui Temple in the Eastern Capital of the Song Dynasty

> Hui Guang, also known as Jingzhi, was born into the Fan family of Chengdu. He authored the book \*Tang Jian\*, which was actually written by his uncle. He studied under Chan Master Fajing of Jingyin Temple, where he deeply grasped the essence of Chan and later taught at Miaohui Temple in the eastern capital. In the third year of the Zhenghe era, the emperor bestowed monastic robes from the palace to several senior Chan masters, and Hui Guang was among them. He was then asked to give a Dharma talk in order of seniority, and Hui Guang was the last to speak. After ascending the seat and concluding the question-and-answer session, he looked at the assembly and said, "When it comes to discussing Chan and the Dharma, the great Chan masters have already said it all. What is there left for this humble monk to say? Have you not heard the ancient saying: 'A thousand words, ten thousand explanations—all to help you remain undeluded.' Even so, what is the ultimate truth?" He then covered his head with the monastic robe, remained silent for a long moment, and said, "With the robe draped over my head, all matters cease. At this moment, this humble monk knows nothing." With that, he descended from the seat. At that time, thousands of monastics and laypeople were listening, and all were filled with admiration. For this reason, Han Zicang, a court official, praised Hui Guang in his epitaph, commending his vast knowledge and eloquence. His stupa was built at the Shengxiang Plain on the western hills of Yuzhang.
