### 四三、宋蘇州西竺寺尼智通傳

> Biography of Nun Zhitong of Xizhu Temple in Suzhou, Song Dynasty

智通，號空室道人，龍圖范珣女也。幼聰慧，長歸丞相蘇頌之孫悌。未幾，厭世相，還家求祝髮。父難之，遂閉戶清修。因看法界觀，頓有省，連作二偈見意。一曰：「浩浩塵中體一如，縱橫交互印毘盧。全波是水波非水，全水成波水自殊。」次曰：「物我元無異，森羅鏡像同。明明超主伴，了了徹真空。一體含多法，交參帝網中。重重無盡處，動靜悉圓通。」後父母俱亡，兄涓領分寧尉，通偕行。聞死心禪師道望，特往謁之，心見知其所得。便問：「常啼菩薩賣卻心肝，教誰學般若？」通曰：「你若無心我也休。」又問：「一雨所滋，根苗有異。無陰陽地上，生箇甚麼。」通曰：「一花五葉。」復問：「十二時中向甚麼處安身立命？」通曰：「和尚惜取眉毛好。」心打曰：「這婦女亂作次第。」通禮拜，心然之，於是道聲籍甚。政和間，居金陵，設浴於保寧。揭榜於門曰：「一物也無，洗箇甚麼？纖塵若有，起自何來？道取一句子玄，乃得大家入浴。古靈祇解揩背，開士何曾明心？欲證離垢地時，須是通身汗出。盡道水能洗垢，焉知水亦是塵。直饒水垢頓除，到此亦須洗卻。」後為尼，名惟久，挂錫姑蘇之西竺。緇白日夕叩問，得其道者頗眾。俄示疾，書偈趺坐而終，有明心錄行於世。

> Zhitong, known as the Hermit of the Empty Room, was the daughter of Fan Xun, an official in the Bureau of Imperial Charts. From a young age, she was exceptionally bright. When she grew up, she married Su Ti, the grandson of the chancellor Su Song. Not long after, weary of worldly affairs, she returned to her family and sought to have her head shaved to become a nun. Her father was reluctant, so she shut herself away to cultivate purity in seclusion. While studying the \*Contemplation of the Dharmadhatu\*, she suddenly attained insight and composed two verses to express her realization. The first went: \*Vast and boundless, in the midst of dust, the essence is one;\* \*Interweaving freely, it mirrors Vairocana.\* \*All waves are water, yet waves are not water;\* \*All water forms waves, yet water remains distinct.\* The second said: \*Self and others are originally not different,\* \*Like myriad reflections in a mirror, all the same.\* \*Clearly transcending host and guest,\* \*Thoroughly penetrating absolute emptiness.\* \*One body embraces many dharmas,\* \*Interwoven in Indra's net.\* \*Layer upon layer, without end,\* \*In motion and stillness, all is perfectly unobstructed.\* Later, after both her parents passed away, her brother Fan Juan was appointed as an official in Fenning, and Zhitong accompanied him. Hearing of the renowned Chan master Deathless Mind, she went especially to visit him. Mind, recognizing her attainment, asked, "The Bodhisattva Constant Weeping sold his own heart and liver—whom did he teach to learn Prajna?" Zhitong replied, "If you have no mind, I too am at rest." He asked further, "Nourished by the same rain, roots and sprouts differ. On ground without yin or yang, what is born?" She answered, "One flower, five petals." Again he asked, "In the twelve periods of the day, where do you settle your body and establish your life?" She said, "Venerable, you'd better take care of your eyebrows." Mind struck her and said, "This woman is making a mess of order." Zhitong bowed, and Mind approved. From then on, her reputation in the Way spread widely. During the Zhenghe era, she resided in Jinling and set up a bathhouse at Baoning Temple. She posted a notice at the gate that read: \*When not a single thing exists, what is there to wash?\* \*If even a speck of dust arises, where does it come from?\* \*Speak one phrase of mystery, and then everyone may enter the bath.\* \*Ancient Ling only knew how to scrub backs—\* \*Has the enlightened one ever clarified the mind?\* \*To realize the Stainless Ground, you must sweat from head to toe.\* \*All say water can wash away grime,\* \*But who knows water itself is also dust?\* \*Even if water and grime are suddenly removed,\* \*At this point, even that must be washed away.\* Later, she became a nun with the name Weijiu and resided at Xizhu Temple in Gusu. Monastics and laypeople came day and night to inquire, and many attained her teaching. Soon after, she fell ill, wrote a verse, sat upright in meditation, and passed away. Her work \*Record of Illuminating the Mind\* circulated in the world.
