### 五四、宋蘇州李氏庵尼祖懃傳

> Fifty-four. Biography of Nun Zuqin of Li's Nunnery in Suzhou, Song Dynasty

祖懃，華亭計氏女。少依潤州焦山或庵禪師咨決大事，旦暮精勤，久而有省。說法無礙，文思敏速，隨意寫作，皆詮妙旨。有俗官伸紙討偈，懃書之曰：「終日為官不識官，終年多被吏人瞞。喝散吏人官自顯，揭翻北斗面南看。」言近旨遠，大率類此。多處請出世，堅臥不起。終於姑蘇楓橋李氏庵，詩文數卷，稿佚不傳。

> Zǔ Qín, a woman from the Ji family of Huating. In her youth, she studied under Master Huò'ān of Jiaoshan in Runzhou, seeking guidance on the great matter of life and death. Day and night, she practiced with diligence and devotion, and after a long time, she attained insight. Her teachings flowed without hindrance, her literary thoughts were swift and sharp, and whatever she wrote spontaneously conveyed profound truths. Once, a lay official presented her with paper, requesting a verse. Zǔ Qín wrote: All day in office, yet the office unseen, All year deceived by clerks, it seems. Dismiss the clerks—the office stands clear, Turn the Dipper over, face the south, and see. Her words were simple, yet their meaning ran deep—most of her works were like this. Many places invited her to teach publicly, but she remained steadfast in seclusion, refusing to emerge. She passed away at the Li family hermitage on Fengqiao in Gusu. Though she left several volumes of poetry and prose, the manuscripts were lost and have not been passed down.
