### 九三、清嘉興寶珠庵尼明修傳

> Ninety-Three: Biography of Nun Mingxiu of Baozhu Nunnery in Jiaxing

明修，嘉興陸氏女。年十五，字於關為待年婦。踰年，關殤，陸願守貞，誓不去，姑命以夫兄子為後，已相安矣。越三年，夫兄忽欲嫁之，數以微詞諷陸，不得已歸父母。夫兄仍與媒謀，猝舁婚輿，欲暮夜強致之。陸覺而逸，婚人揚炬大索，陸輒覘火光轉徙，得匿以免。念姻家女，有為尼孫庵者，乃急走就之。關猶索不已，陸慷慨誓死，族人有義之者，為白其事於縣，始罷。後祝髮於寶珠庵。明敏通曉世故，有丈夫氣，不僅以貞潔著也，年七十九卒。

> Mingxiu was the daughter of the Lu family from Jiaxing. At the age of fifteen, she was betrothed to the Guan family as a future bride. The following year, her fiancé passed away, but Lu vowed to remain faithful and refused to leave the Guan household. Her mother-in-law arranged for her to adopt her late husband’s nephew as her heir, and for a time, they lived in peace. Three years later, her brother-in-law suddenly decided to marry her off, repeatedly hinting at the idea. With no other choice, Lu returned to her parents’ home. Yet her brother-in-law continued to scheme with a matchmaker, arranging a bridal sedan to forcibly take her away under cover of night. Lu discovered the plot and fled. The wedding party lit torches and searched for her, but she kept moving away from the light, managing to hide and escape. Remembering that a relative’s daughter had become a nun at Sun Convent, she hurried there for refuge. The Guan family persisted in pursuing her, but Lu declared with unwavering resolve that she would rather die than remarry. Moved by her integrity, a relative from her clan reported the matter to the county authorities, and only then did the pursuit cease. Later, she took monastic vows at Baozhu Convent. Intelligent and well-versed in worldly affairs, she possessed a resilient spirit, known not only for her chastity but also for her strength of character. She passed away at the age of seventy-nine.
