> The Master of Stillness, known as Lingxu, was from Fujian and belonged to the Xu family. In her childhood, she was betrothed to a young man from the Yang family in her village. When Yang passed away, the Master was only a few years old. Upon hearing the news, she refused to eat, wishing to follow him in death. Her parents, astonished by her determination at such a tender age, held her close and tried to force her to eat, but she could not be swayed. Her breath grew faint, and they finally relented, allowing her to take lifelong vows of vegetarianism and become a nun. Only then did she gradually begin to take some thin rice porridge. She then secluded herself in a room to observe mourning. After the mourning period ended, she took the tonsure under the guidance of the elder nun Jueyuan. For sixty years, she upheld the precepts with unwavering diligence, as steadfast as the first day. At the age of seventy-five, reflecting on the transient nature of the body, she knew her time was near. She chose a site at Wufeng Mountain in the northern outskirts of the city and built the Putong Pagoda, a final resting place for all who shared the monastic life.
