> Ninety-seven: Biography of Nun Xinwen of a Nunnery in Hanyang

> Xinwen, a nun residing at a convent in Hanyang, was in her fifties and devoted to upholding the precepts. In the second month of the tenth year of the Shunzhi reign, she and eight disciples braved the dangers of travel, sailing far to Jinling's Baohua Mountain to seek an audience with Master Jianyue, the Vinaya master. They requested a three-month summer retreat, offering sixty bushels of rice and twenty taels of silver. Seeing their sincere and earnest intent, Master Jianyue took pity and granted their request. On the day of the offering meal, however, she refused to enter the hall to pay respects to the Buddha. After the meal, Master Jianyue assembled the community and summoned Xinwen. He said to her, "You made the long journey with the aspiration to study the precepts. Why did you not enter the refectory to pay respects to the Sangha? According to the Vinaya, a bhikshuni, even if a hundred years old, should pay respects to a bhikshu who has completed his first summer retreat. Your arrogance toward the Sangha shows you are not truly here to learn the precepts." Xinwen replied, "In my home region of Chu, wherever I visited virtuous teachers to make offerings, the abbots always received me as a guest and did not require me to bow." Master Jianyue said, "Those who covet offerings corrupt the Dharma. They treat nuns with connections with the reverence due to their own mothers, hoping for further generous offerings. They are parasites within the lion's body, not true virtuous teachers. Here at Baohua Mountain, though our provisions are meager, we would rather face starvation than violate the rules to seek profit. Today's meal shall be considered the monastery's own provision. Your silver is returned to you. Your rice is at the lower monastery; you may take it and depart." Filled with ignorant anger, Xinwen took the silver, gathered her disciples, and descended to the rear mountain, settling in the Shuichuan Retreat. Her disciple, Gutan, entered Master Jianyue's quarters and said, "That nun came from afar. Our monastery's stores are empty. Could the Master, out of skillful means, accept her? This would not discourage her mind, and the community would have provisions for half a month." Master Jianyue sternly replied, "If one is truly willing to practice, the community will not go without alms. Establishing the Dharma-gate is tested precisely in times of hardship. How could a Vinaya master upholding the precepts see profit and violate the sagely regulations?" Gutan, ashamed, bowed and withdrew. Three days later, Xinwen led her disciples back up the mountain and knelt together outside the abbot's quarters, weeping. She said that in Chu she had been deluded in such ways and that her arrogance toward the Sangha was not intentional. She earnestly begged the Master for compassionate allowance to repent and vowed to fully comply with all his instructions. The senior monks interceded on her behalf with bows and pleas. Consequently, she was permitted to establish a boundary and undertake the summer retreat at Lushan Manor. Instructors were sent every half-month to teach and admonish them and to explain the full Vinaya for nuns. Master Jianyue subsequently composed the one-volume \*Proper Model for Instructing Bhikshunis\*.
