> Biography of Nun Wuwo of Tandu Temple in South Sea

> No-Self, a lady-in-waiting in the palace of Prince Pingnan Shang Kexi, followed the prince’s daughter Ziwu in renouncing the world at Nanhai, becoming a nun at Tandu Convent. She was skilled in poetry and painting, especially excelling in figure portraits. In the convent, there is a portrait of Ziwu, with disheveled hair and dressed in purple, her delicate brows slightly furrowed as if bearing a heavy sorrow. It is said to have been painted by No-Self. She also once painted a full-length self-portrait, lying with her cheek resting on her hand and her head pillowed on a stone, shaded by plantain leaves and moss, blending harmoniously with the surroundings. An inscribed verse reads: > When the six senses are purified, all dust is gone; > Chewing wax, one finds sweetness returned. > Do not laugh at the green sky’s manifest form— > Who in this world did not come naked? The sentiment is profound and far-reaching, her insight lofty and subtle, drawing inspiration from the Vimalakirti Sutra’s teaching that “this body is like a plantain, with nothing solid within.” Her calligraphy is also graceful and refined, skilled and fluid, carrying the lingering charm of the \*Lanting Xu\*. She devoted herself to burning incense, reciting sutras, and chanting with serene melodies, diligently turning the pages of the palm-leaf scriptures. Rarely did she pick up a brush, and thus her writings and paintings are highly esteemed by the world.
