> Biography of Nunn De Yin from Xidongting Mountain in Wuxian County, Qing Dynasty

德隱，吳縣人，姓趙名昭，字子惠，隱士宦光女。祖母陸卿子，母父端容，俱擅詞翰之學。德隱能嗣其美，寫生工秀，兼長蘭竹。適平湖文學馬仲子班。性好煙霞，常葛衫椎髻，自擬道民。父母歿，隱歸葬之，乞名人誌其墓，人謂無子而有子者，德隱也。會馬氏丁難，破家，遂更名入空門，結庵西洞庭山，香林匿影二十餘年，為吳中奇女子。清磬之餘，不廢吟咏，有詩云：「虞山錢太史柳君，春日采蘭，忽得雙了，復以並蒂植之庭中，命余圖焉。時席試湯餅，會諸名閨共賦采蘭詞，余亦成詠。日照鮮膚露未乾，輕羅徐酌喚人看。若因野客良緣好，兩席花前看浴蘭。」又新秋晚眺云：「山中多晚涼，清風厲秋節。遙瞻四五峰，壁立皆奇絕。修竹傍林開，喬松倚巖列。黃菊散芳叢，清泉凝白雪。對此懷素心，千里共明月。願保幽貞姿，歲寒雙皎潔。」著有侶雲居遺稿。

> De Yin, a native of Wuxian, was originally named Zhao Zhao, courtesy name Zihui, the daughter of the hermit-official Zhao Guang. Her grandmother, Lu Qingzi, and her mother, Wen Duanrong, were both accomplished in poetry and literature. De Yin inherited their talents, excelling in lifelike and elegant flower-and-bird painting, as well as orchids and bamboo. She married Ma Ban, a scholar from Pinghu. Fond of nature and seclusion, she often dressed simply in coarse robes and wore her hair in a bun, likening herself to a Daoist recluse. After her parents passed away, she returned to bury them and requested notable figures to compose epitaphs for their tombs. People remarked that though she had no sons, she fulfilled the duties of one—such was De Yin. When the Ma family encountered misfortune and lost their wealth, she changed her name and entered monastic life, building a hermitage on West Dongting Mountain. For over twenty years, she lived in seclusion among the fragrant woods, becoming known as an extraordinary woman of the Wu region. Amidst the clear sounds of temple bells, she never ceased composing poetry. One of her poems reads: \*"Scholar Qian Liu of Yushan gathered orchids in spring, By chance finding a pair, he planted them side by side in his courtyard, And asked me to paint them. At a feast with rice dumplings, Elegant ladies gathered to compose verses on gathering orchids, And I too wrote these lines: Sunlight glistens on fresh petals, dew not yet dry, Light silk sleeves slowly lifted, calling others to admire. If by chance a rustic guest shares this fine bond, We’ll sit before two mats of flowers, bathing in orchid scent."\* Another poem, \*Gazing at Dusk in Early Autumn\*, says: \*"The mountain holds much evening cool, Clear winds sharpen the autumn air. Gazing afar at four or five peaks, Sheer cliffs stand in wondrous grandeur. Tall bamboo opens by the woods, Ancient pines line the rocky slopes. Yellow chrysanthemums scatter among fragrant clusters, Clear springs congeal like white snow. Facing this, my simple heart stirs, A thousand miles shared under the bright moon. May I preserve this secluded, steadfast grace, Through winter’s cold, doubly pure and bright."\* She authored the collection \*Surviving Drafts from Dwelling with Clouds\*.
