### 一〇三、清常熟直指庵尼行玄傳

> 103\. Biography of Nun Xingxuan of Zhizhi Temple in Changshu

行玄，字圓鑑，常熟曹氏女。幼出家，詣報國受具，嚴持律範。初參金粟悟，禮拜次，即竪拳。悟便棒曰：「者箇是甚麼？」玄曰：「千聖不識。」悟曰：「放下著。」玄曰：「放下箇甚麼？」悟乃休。後謁古南得法，掩關虞山直指庵。黃淳耀進士一日到關，問曰：「久慕關主。」玄曰：「貧道總不識。」士曰：「啟口即是葛藤，要師全提。」玄曰：「放下著。」士大悅。錢宗伯夫人問：「如何是『萬法歸一，一歸何處』？」玄曰：「秀水年年秀，青山歲歲青。」康熙癸丑二月十一日，無疾，忽命剃頭，沐浴更衣，趺坐說偈曰：「七十三年假借名，了無一法可當情。而今四大隨機散，會向檀那致別聲。」遂怡然而化，語錄年譜行世。

> Xingxuan, also known as Yuanyan, was a woman from the Cao family of Changshu. She left home to become a nun in her youth, received full ordination at Baoguo Temple, and strictly upheld the monastic precepts. When she first visited Master Jin Suwu, as she bowed in greeting, she raised her fist. Suwu immediately struck her with his staff and asked, "What is this?" Xingxuan replied, "Even a thousand sages would not recognize it." Suwu said, "Let it go." Xingxuan asked, "What is there to let go of?" Suwu then remained silent. Later, she studied under Master Gu Nan and attained enlightenment. She secluded herself in meditation at Zhizhi Temple on Yushan Mountain. One day, the scholar Huang Chunyao came to her retreat and said, "I have long admired the master of this retreat." Xingxuan replied, "This humble nun knows nothing." Huang said, "To speak is already entanglement—I ask the master to reveal the whole truth." Xingxuan said, "Let it go." Huang was greatly delighted. Madame Qian Zongbo once asked her, "What does it mean that 'all dharmas return to one, and where does that one return to?'" Xingxuan replied, "The waters of Xiushui flow clear year after year, and the green mountains remain green season after season." On the eleventh day of the second month in the year Guichou of the Kangxi era, though in perfect health, she suddenly asked to have her head shaved, bathed, changed her robes, sat in meditation, and recited a verse: > For seventy-three years, I borrowed a name, > Yet in truth, there is not a single dharma to cling to. > Now, as the four elements scatter with the changing conditions, > I shall bid farewell to my benefactors. With these words, she peacefully passed away. Her recorded sayings and chronicle of her life were later published.
