The monk Zhiyi (538–597) of the Sui Dynasty was a pivotal figure in Chinese Buddhism, most notably authoring the seminal work "Mohe Zhiguan" (Great Calming and Contemplation). Guanding (561–632), also of the Sui Dynasty, was Zhiyi's most prominent disciple and is credited with compiling and preserving Zhiyi's teachings in texts like the "Fahua Xuanyi" and "Fahua Wengfa".
